WFNA County Restoration Handbook - New Site Launched PDF Print E-mail

The Well-Fed Neighbor Alliance has launched a new web site for the County Restoration Handbook, promoted by the Well-Fed Neighbor Alliance and hosted by the Statesmen for Our Constitutional Republic. This is an effort with many collaborators, compiling information written and assembled by dozens of organizations, but we are proud to be a part of it.

There is already much excellent information available on the food localization movement, the Made-In-The-USA efforts to jump start local economies, efforts at grassroots emergency response, citizen self-reliance, good stewardship of the land and resources, homesteading, and so forth, but for anyone starting out learning about these issues, it is a confusing jumble. What do I need to know to get started? How do I get involved in my community? What works? What doesn't? What policy and legal issues exist? The problem is organization.

The County Restoration Handbook is an attempt to create a central resource which actually organizes this information, identifies best practices, links to further, existing, resources, and provides a customizable blueprint for getting your community and your county on the road to healthier, stronger economy, more sensible emergency response, and effective disaster preparation. Our initial handbook will focus on Lawrence County, Missouri, and we fully intend to offer a resource customizable to the needs of every county in the United States. The Handbook will be designed in a collaborative online environment, but the final intent is to have three-ring binders with critical information in every community.

A portion of this effort is work on customizing the Neighborhood Watch program and manual for managing Rural Watch Areas. The needs of farm communities for crime protection and citizens watch activities are simply different than urban, block-oriented communities. As a result of early experiments with the SCR-CERT program, we believe a new approach is needed. A portion of the County Restoration Handbook will therefore be instructions, materials, and best practices for rural Neighborhood Watches. Forums for discussing and documenting these efforts in Lawrence County will be hosted on the same web site.

[Revision 1.1 Updated]

This is a follow-up on my earlier commentary on the "Collateral Murder" Iraq/Wikileaks Apache gun camera footage incident. It has just come to my attention that the person who leaked the classified footage has been identified and arrested. This essay discusses his arrest and probable punishment, whether his actions were "right" in the first place, and the morality of leaking classified evidence of a crime.

Volunteer For Elections PDF Print E-mail

I have copies of the form needed to volunteer for election work in Lawrence County. I got it from the County Clerk's Office (currently in the Old Courthouse). If you are not in Lawrence County, you should be able to get the appropriate form from your County Clerk. Aside from people conducting the actual machinery of the election, each precinct/ward/township voting place in Missouri requires an election Judge and a Poll Challenger from each party. I also now have a current election map for Lawrence County from the County Assessor's office (showing township and subdivision boundaries). You can also get one of these direct from the County Assessor for $15. Be sure to specify an election map, not just township/incorporated boundaries.

Please volunteer for election work! The election process is one of the most basic mechanisms supporting our system of governance. This burden belongs to everyone and work at the elections also tends to be... educational.

Health Care Referendum, Jobs Bill, and Real Change PDF Print E-mail

I just read several quotes from various state representatives who voted against the Missouri Health Reform Referendum which will put on the ballot the question of whether Missouri will effectively nullify the Federal "Health Reform Bill". I am not going to approach the question of whether this referendum is the best way to fight a Federal takeover of health care--- I am not sure that it is--- but I wanted to comment on several of the statements that really typify the entire struggle. I won't mention names.

Letter From Purgason; Kudos To Nixon On State Budget PDF Print E-mail

[Draft 1.0 Release]

This post contains the text of an email from Missouri State Senator Chuck Purgason on the state budget process. I have been following the debate on our current budget crisis and have found his summaries useful and informative.

Amidst economic and other troubles, I believe it is critical to praise our representatives for doing right at least as much as we complain about them doing wrong. I have heard from several sources lately, including the quoted letter, that Governor Jay Nixon has been proactive and considered in his approach to this year's budget. I would not normally consider it characteristic for a Democratic Governor and a Republican House to be on the sides they are at the moment, the Governor trying to cut and the House dancing around the issue: we often get caught up in partisan struggles when politicians, like anyone, need to be judged as individuals.
