This is an excellent article sent to me by Allen Busiek which describes how the US is vulnerable to some of the same problems currently plaguing Haiti and what we can do about it. You may also want to consult this PDF, "MR Study - Consequences Resulting from a Major Earthquake in the Central U.S".

This post may be refiled shortly.

Participation in the Central Committee Process PDF Print E-mail

I have uploaded the document I spoke of in Springfield today in PDF and Open Document for those who wanted to look at it. It is Republican Party-specific but easily adapted. It is definitely not perfect but it was a starting point--- something I could hand people as I walked my ward and something for them to give back to me so I knew what was important to them. Never ask for something (money, votes, signup, etc) the first time you knock on someone's door. Period.

I will post more of my information from today (and a more complete explanation) here (I will edit this post). As soon as I have a chance. Thank you, everyone, for your interest.

FCC Banning Gospel On The Airwaves? Scam. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Eric Vought

I was recently sent an email claiming that a group of atheists was petitioning the FCC to have readings of the Gospel banned from all the airwaves. It turns out that this is a scam and an old one. I have some information here and I also take some time to spell out why these scams are not just irritating but may actually be dangerous to you and the people you forward them to.

Visit to McCaskill's Office --- Healthcare Bill and Complexity PDF Print E-mail
Written by Eric Vought

My wife and I recently visited Senator Claire McCaskill's office in Springfield to discuss the health care issue. We had an interesting and useful conversation with her District Director, David Rauch. Both of us having spoken to him before, we share the opinion that he often represents the Senator better than the Senator does herself. He has always been courteous, reasonably well informed, and interested in our point of view. To me, this is the model of what a statesman does: facilitates active discussion on the issues in order to find the best solution; a statesman is always polite, especially with those with which he (or she) disagrees even if he is firm in his own convictions. It is regretful to me that I have seldom got this impression from Claire McCaskill herself.

In any case, the following is from the letter my wife and I sent to him following our visit. It highlights one issue we discussed: that of the enormous complexity of the bill and why it is directly damaging to the health reform effort regardless of its contents.

Martial Law in Chicago? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Eric Vought
Wednesday, 30 September 2009 20:29

In response to Republican US Senate Candidate Andy Martin's call for martial law in Chicago, I have to step back and honestly ask which Chicago he is talking about. The one in the United States is doing no worse than usual (perhaps better in some respects) while, in this country, I was reasonably certain use of Federal troops and National Guard for simple crime control was still illegal. Not only that, but a heavy-handed armed response to current gang violence is calculated to inflame race relations worse than Chicago's violence in the '60s--- nearly twice the crime rate of today.
